LNWC is a chapter of the North Carolina Wildlife Federation (NCWF) – a community based organization established for the purposes of environmental education, appreciation of wildlife and natural history, and conservation of wildlife habitat and natural resources.
Lake Norman, North Carolina’s largest man-made lake, plays host to crucial habitat for various wildlife species, requiring dedicated efforts to conserve its natural beauty and ecological integrity. North Carolina Wildlife Federation (NCWF), the State’s oldest wildlife conservation organization, doubled down on its commitment to protect, conserve, and restore wildlife and habitat in the Lake Norman area by making it home to one of NCWF’s first community chapters in the State. Established in 2009, Lake Norman Wildlife thrived from the beginning as the group was founded upon a previously existing initiative, the Island Habitat Program, which was created by NCWF and Duke Energy a few years prior. Over the years, the organization expanded its efforts to reach beyond the shorelines of Lake Norman to include partnerships with local governments, schools, corporate partners, and other environmental agencies.
Lake Norman Wildlife accomplishes its mission to protect, conserve, and restore wildlife and habitat by organizing community events such as clean-up days, native plant installations, and educational workshops that foster a sense of stewardship among residents. However, the organization’s roots are as strong as ever, as the Island Habitat Program was recently reconstituted to include more program leaders, volunteers, and island adopters than ever. Lake Norman Wildlife projects and programs aim to educate the community on the importance of protecting local flora and fauna, emphasizing that a thriving ecosystem is beneficial for both wildlife and people. Today, Lake Norman Wildlife continues its work, inspired by the belief that protecting the environment is a communal responsibility. Through ongoing outreach and advocacy, they strive to ensure that Lake Norman remains a cherished resource for future generations, maintaining its delicate balance of wildlife and human activity.
The Vision of the Lake Norman Wildlife Conservationists is to protect and enhance the natural resources and wildlife habitats of the greater Lake Norman area, for all to enjoy.
LNWC recently restructured several areas of the organization and our programs, creating new opportunities for volunteers and leadership roles.
